Theatre Trip to watch ‘Noughts and Crosses’

GCSE and A Level Drama students attended a performance of Noughts and Crosses at Derby Theatre on Wednesday 11 March 2026. This powerful production, adapted for the stage by Sabrina Mahfouz and performed by Pilot Theatre, provided students with an invaluable opportunity to experience live professional theatre and deepen their understanding of performance in preparation for their examinations.

The visit was specifically designed to enhance students’ ability to analyse and evaluate live theatre, which is a key component of both the Eduqas GCSE Drama and Edexcel A Level Drama and Theatre specifications. Experiencing a contemporary professional production enabled students to observe how dramatic intentions are realised through performance and design in a live setting, bringing classroom learning to life in a meaningful and engaging way.

These observations will directly support GCSE students in Section B of the Eduqas Drama written examination, where they are required to evaluate a live performance. The experience provided students with a strong, relevant example which they can draw upon in their written responses, enabling them to write with greater confidence, accuracy and detail.

A particular highlight of the visit was the opportunity for A Level Drama students to engage beyond the performance itself. Following the show, students had the privilege of speaking with Esther Richardson, the director, who was present in the audience. This valuable discussion gave students insight into the creative process, allowing them to further understand the intentions behind the production and the decisions made throughout its development.

Following the visit, students have undertaken focused classroom activities to consolidate their learning and completed practice extended responses under exam conditions to ensure they are well prepared for their written examinations.

Students demonstrated exemplary behaviour throughout the visit and engaged with the performance in a thoughtful and mature manner. Their conduct at the theatre and during travel reflected very positively on the school and contributed to a successful and enriching experience for all involved.
